The Scholar series of heat pumps and air conditioners are designed to
provide quiet, efficient cooling, heating and ventilation for classrooms
in a single package. The air source units are our new Scholar III
and the Scholar QV. The Scholar III and the
Scholar QV units are available as heat pumps or air conditioners. The
GeoScholar water source units are available only as heat pumps.
The units are installed inside
the classroom against an exterior wall. The vertical configuration
minimizes the floor space occupied by the HVAC unit. Individual
classroom units mean superior comfort and energy savings. All Scholar
units provide the flexibility of part-load cooling and heating and
redundancy by design. When a central chiller/boiler system fails, an
entire wing or school is affected. If a Scholar unit needs service, only
one classroom is affected. When only a portion of the wing or school is
being used, a large chiller/boiler system may have to operate the
chiller at a reduced part load condition, the boiler for reheat and a
large air handler. With Scholars, only the classroom or office being
used is conditioned.
To meet fresh air requirements, a full range of ventilation options are available, including the Marvair GreenWheel® Energy Recovery Ventilator. All service and maintenance can be performed while the unit is in the classroom; sliding the unit away from the wall is not required. The Scholar units can be controlled by a wall mounted thermostat or interfaced with an energy management system.
Cost Savings
The Scholar heat pumps and air conditioners are economical to install
and operate. When compared to central systems, the Scholar units can be
up to 50% less to install. See the case study on the Atlantic City
Schools on a comparison of Scholar QV heat pumps to water source heat
pumps.
Because of the operating efficiency, the Scholar units can provide
energy savings over their entire lifetime of operation. See the case
study on the Polk County Schools case study for a comparison of the
operating costs of a central system and Scholar heat pumps in identical
schools.
Energy Efficient
The Scholar III heat pumps feature EER's from 10.7 to 11.2 when tested to the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration standard 390. Scholar III units with a two stage compressor have Integrated Part Load Value's (IPLV) of up to 14.9.
The Scholar QV heat pumps have EER's up to 9.40.
The GeoScholar water source units have EER's up to 17.0 and COP's as high as 3.7.
Quiet Operation
Educators and designers are increasing realizing the importance of good
acoustics in the classroom. The Scholar series are designed to provide
an environment conducive to learning. The Scholar III units feature a
sound level of 45 dBA in an unducted installation. With ducting, the
sound can be reduced even lower levels.
Elegant School Facade
With the Scholar inside the classroom, only a
louver is visible on the exterior of the school. And the louvers are
available in a wide variety of styles, configurations and colors to
complement the facade of any school. For a complete description of the
of the Architectural Louvers, please refer to the Architectural Louver
Brochure.

Heat pumps and Air conditioners in a variety of sizes
Both the Scholar III and Scholar QV air source units are available as
heat pumps or air conditioners with cooling capacities of 2, 2.5, 3,
3.5, 4, and 5 tons. The GeoScholar water source units are only available
as a heat pump with the same cooling capacities as the air source units.
All units are tested to UL standards, listed by ETL and performance
certified according to the applicable Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
(ARI) standard.
Easy to install
For our air source units, the Scholar QV and the Scholar III, a single
opening in the wall provides ingress and egress of the condenser air and
intake and exhaust of the fresh air. For the GeoScholar water source
unit, the opening is used for fresh air intake and exhaust. Installation
does not require expensive structural changes. This unique design makes
the units ideal for both new schools and when renovating existing
classrooms.
Fresh air
To meet the requirements of ASHRAE 62, Marvair
offers a number of ventilation options on all of the Scholar units. All ventilation options can
provide up to 450 cfm of outside air (up to 40% of rated air flow).

GreenWheel ERV |
Humidity Control
The requirement for up to 30 cfm of outside air for each student can create serious
problems with humidity. The Scholar units have always provided humidity
control with hot gas reheat and the GreenWheel ERV. The Scholar III
advances humidity control with an optional two stage compressor and an
electronically commutated indoor blower motor. The two stage compressor
provides better total comfort, uses less energy and better humidity
control. The electronically commutated motor optimizes moisture removal
by automatically maintaining the desired air flow across the coil.
Programmable Logic Controller
This on board computer provides many of the control functions, performs
extensive self- diagnosis to assess the operational status and indicate
a fault when detected. The PLC can be programmed remotely or with a
removable program storage device. LED indicator lights show operational
status and provide assistance with diagnosis if troubleshooting is ever
required.
Full Range of Options & Accessories
All Scholar heat pumps and air conditioners offer a choice of either
electric resistance or hot water heat and a full range of accessories
including grilles, base stands, display boards, thermostats, trim
pieces, and plenums. Please see the web page and product data sheets for
each of the Scholar units for a full description of the unit.
